What Robinson Crusoe Can Teach Us About Perseverance

Besides the obvious - don’t give up.

I’ve been reading this wonderful book by Daniel Defoe and there is much to learn here. The lesson that really strikes me is that we truly can learn and do anything once we set our mind to it.

Crusoe talks about never having handled a tool in his life and yet with determination and perseverance he learned from those wonderful teachers, trial and error. He built himself a rather comfortable home on his deserted island. He could have completely given in to despair and died. Who could blame him? But he didn’t. He took what he could salvage from the ship (which he learned how to do by trial and error) and he first took care of his needs and then he took care of his wants.

Defoe’s narrative of what it took to build a simple table and chair is a wonderful example of what we can do when we simply choose to.

As Henry Ford said, “If you think you can or think you can’t, you are right.”

What will you choose to do?
