The “Working in your PJ’s” Mindset

Jun 16, 2009  |  under Something to think about  |  by Sandra

Imagine this:

You get up in the morning, grab a cup a coffee, and get hubby and kids out the door. Then you leisurely walk down the hall to your office. You flip on your computer to check your email and answer a few “urgent” messages. Then you get up and go start a load of laundry. And go back to your office and start a project for a client. Ooops, you forgot to get something for dinner out of the freezer. Ok, that’s done, now you can work on the project again. The phone rings and you answer it. It’s a girl friend and you chitchat for a few minutes, ok more than a few minutes. Then you realize that you haven’t even gotten dressed yet and it’s already noon. Oh well, that’s why you work at home!

But you should at least brush your teeth so you get up and go into the bathroom and while your are brushing your teeth you flip on the TV and get caught up in Oprah. Oh my gosh! You jump up and hurry back to your office because you promised another client you would get her project completed today…

And now it’s 4:00 pm and you realize you can’t still be in your jammies when your hubby gets home - he already doesn’t take this seriously. He thinks you just gab on the phone all day and watch Oprah!

Oh, wait a minute…

Ok, now picture this…

You get up in the morning and enjoy the hustle and bustle of getting the kids and hubby out the door. You go back to your bedroom, shower, and get dressed. And isn’t it nice that you don’t have to commute or wear a suit? You walk down the hall in comfy clothes and remember how nice it is to work in your comfy home office. You check your schedule and map out your work day. Then you get to work. You ignore the phone and email and do excellent work on your client’s project. Then you check email and phone calls and respond to those that need a response. There is a message from your girlfriend. You call her back and let her know that you are working and can’t chat but you make a date for coffee for tomorrow. You take a break for lunch and go for a walk to clear the cobwebs in your brain. Back to work now you move through your work schedule easily and effortlessly. When you finish you check email and phone messages, handling what needs to be handled now and scheduling what can wait.

Finished with work for the day you start a load of laundry and start dinner. Hubby and kids come home and over dinner you all share your day. You share the good news that one of the emails you received today was from a prospect who wants to get started and you are doing an orientation tomorrow. High fives all around. Your son tells about basketball practice and how he made his first 3-point shot! More high fives! While the kids do the dishes, you finish the laundry. Your hubby comes in and asks if you would call one of his co-workers wives. She is interested in being a VA and he suggested she talk to you since you are doing so well. He doesn’t even realize that he is absentmindedly helping you fold the laundry. ;)

So yea, you can work in your jammies, but should you?
