Slaughtering Sacred Cows
I was listening to a podcast the other morning and the woman being interviewed runs a highly successful, completely online business in Australia. She was talking about how she trusted her instincts instead of tradition to build her business. At one point, she used the term “slaughtering sacred cows.” I laughed at the time but the term really stuck with me.
A few days later, one of the dream-stealers in my life (who is unfortunately related to my children so I have to deal with this person) made yet another negative comment about my career path. This person, while highly intelligent, subscribes to the school of thought that only the traditional career path is a successful career path. Traditional meaning that you get a job, climb the corporate ladder and retire after 40 years of letting an employer run your life while you build their business, not to mention their bank account.
I reflected back on the idea of “slaughtering sacred cows” and realized that this was simply a Sacred Cow. Personally, I would rather work with a client than for an employer but that’s not a right vs. wrong thing, it’s just a different thing.
So I slaughtered my Sacred Cow.
What Sacred Cows have you slaughtered - or want to?

Hello, my name is Sandra and I am proud to be a Professional Virtual Assistant! I have worked in the Virtual Assisting Industry as an independent VA and through a Virtual Staffing Agency (VSA). I have done Sales and Customer Service for a VSA and I have been a client with a VA Team of my own. I've seen it from every angle! I have developed a passion not only for this industry but also for mentoring and training women who want to have successful VA Businesses.

I think that we all face the ‘dream crashers’ when we choose a path that is not as traditional.
People that have been raised with the ‘follow the leader’ mentality have no way of seeing that maybe WE want to be the leader. Yes, we may not start with a huge following but, it will grow.
Just stay positive and don’t let others sway you from your path! Take all the advice and use what you can, just throw the rest away. I’m sure those same people will give you that same advice again. LOL!
Hey Sheryl,
Thanks for stopping by - you are right on in your comments. I must say, I’m having a great time being nontraditionally traditional!
Have a Happy!
Sandra
