Simplifying the Complicated
CMS - A Beginner’s Definition
A relatively new technology buzz term is CMS - Content Management System. There actually isn’t anything new about CMS in terms of results. Content Management Systems are just new formats for things like office memos, brochures and other formats for sharing information.
Current Content Management refers to computer based data management and most commonly to web publishing. WebCMS is software designed for simple and easy publication of Web Content. Users don’t have to know complex tech tools like HTML.
WebCMS tools can be applied to text, photos, music, video and docs. Think: blogs, Flickr, iTunes, YouTube and .PDF’s. WebCMS applications typically have:
• Automated templates
• editable content capabilities (built in word processor)
• plugins and modules to extend functionality (i.e. RSS options)
• Updates to keep current with evolving web technologies
• Workflow management (e.g. draft, edit, schedule and publish)
Joomla is one of the most popular open source CMS solutions and can be used to power many different types of sits form corporate intranets to eCommerce web sites.
WordPress is another open source solution and is the industry standard blogging software. It is highly adaptable and is used for everything from personal journals to corporate websites - free. The saying “You get what you pay for” does not apply! This blog is run on the WP Platform and I am not a tech person! I don’t cook if I can avoid it but I can follow the directions in a recipe. WordPress is the same thing - so even I can do it!
