Hacking into Lifehacker
Have you seen the movie The Italian Job? Ok, so you know the guy that hacks into the traffic light system so he can control the red and green lights? Yea, that’s what I always thought a hacker was - a bad guy who “hacks” into computer systems.
Well, it turns out - and maybe I’m the last person in the world to learn this but…
According to Lifehacker.com, a hack is “a clever shortcut or lesser-known, faster way to get something done. A hacker believes that information-sharing is a powerful positive good, and that it is a hacker’s duty to share her expertise.”
Lifehacker.com, if you have never heard of it is a blog that features tips, shortcuts and downloads to help you be more productive and efficient. They’ve won a bunch of awards and gotten a bunch of press coverage. My favorite thing about the site is the fun writing. It’s not your typical tech (read boring) writing. It’s fun!
According to their FAQ, they added “Life” to hacker because technology isn’t the only thing they hack. You can find hacks about saving water and making cocktails and well, you name it and they probably have a hack for it.
My favorite one is Death Switch - it sends out emails after you die. Hmmm…sound kinda creepy? Well, that’s what I thought at first but then after reading the description I thought this could be kinda cool! How many times have you or someone you know said, “I wish I had told them such and such before they died.” This is your chance to be sure that you aren’t on the other side of that. Sitting up in Heaven (I hope!) on your little white cloud, playing your harp and thinking, “I wish I had told them I love them just one more time.” Or - “Shoot! I forgot to tell them where my will is!”
Lifehacker makes it really easy to focus in on the stuff you need, after all the purpose here is to be more efficient, not less! There are different RSS feeds depending on your interest. You can get top stories daily or weekly highlights. Or really narrow it down to tags. Every tag has a feed so you can get posts only on the topics that interest you. You know, like sending out email from your cloud in Heaven!
What will they think of next?
